Mit dem endgültigen Abschied vom Goldstandard im Jahr 1971 betrat die Welt eine geldhistorisch neue Phase. Zum ersten Mal existierte ein globales Währungssystem ohne materielle Begrenzung. Geld war nun vollständig immateriell geworden. Sein Wert beruhte nicht mehr auf Einlösbarkeit, sondern ausschließlich auf Vertrauen – Vertrauen in Staaten, Institutionen und ihre Fähigkeit, Maß zu halten.

Im Zentrum dieses Systems steht bis heute der US-Dollar.
